If someone put a gun to your head and demanded an explanation, then it might just be a case of commercial Vs private, with market umbrella referring to those wood umbrellas you find used in public places like outdoor restaurants, while patio umbrella is associated with private spaces like your garden, yard or pool.
So perhaps we could consider the wood market umbrella as the forefather of the patio umbrella which have become more common as folk have grown more affluent and wanted to create pleasantly shaded alfresco dining experiences at home.
